What are the signs and symptoms of a fractured jaw?
Deformed, crooked, or shifted mandible
Painful lump in the mandible or below the ear
Malocclusion of the dentition
Loose or missing teeth
Painful swelling or bruised gingival soft tissue at
site of injury
Difficulty opening or pain in the TMJ
Numbness in the chin or lower lip
What is the difference between dislocated and fractured jaw?
Dislocated Jaw

* Protrusion of the jaw
* Pain limited to auricular area of dislocation
* Pain associated with movement of
temporomandibular joint
Fractured Jaw

What are the emergency care?
Call 911; ABC’s maintained
Injury secondary to vital body functions
Increased bleeding, breathing problems
Skull, neck, or internal head injuries
Temporary jaw stabilization and immobilization
What are the medical management?
Reduction (repair bony fractures)
Fixation
What are the dental management?
- diet instructions
- biofilm removal
- irrigation-os consulted
What are the oral manifestations?
Tooth mobility
Periodontal pockets
Tooth sensitivity
Root resporption
Dento-alveolar ankylosis
Gingivitis
Demineralization
