Foundations in Biology Module 2.5 The ultrastructure of plant cells Flashcards
What organelles are found in a plant cell that aren’t in an animal cell
- cellulose cell wall
- chloroplast
- vacuole
What is the role of the cellulose cell wall
Rigid - It is freely permeable so substances can pass into and out of the cell giving the cell its shape
What is the role of the vacuole
It is a membrane lined sac that contains cell sap
- maintenance of turgor to maintain the rigid framework for the cell
What is the tonoplast
The membrane of the vacuole which is selectively permeable
What is the role of chloroplast
Site of photosynthesis
Where are chloroplast found
The green parts of the plant for instance the leaves and stems
What is the structure of the chloroplast
- Starch grain (produced in photosynthesis)
- Stroma (fluid)
- Thylakoids ( internal membranes)
- Lamellae
- Granum (stack of thylakoids)
Where are chlorophyll pigments found
Grana of the chloroplast where light dependent reactions occur in photosynthesis
What does chloroplast have its own of
ribosomes and DNA
What do the thylakoids in the chloroplast provide
A large surface area needed for enzymes, proteins and pigment molecules necessary in photosynthesis
