Assistants - Da Zao & Zhi Gan Cao - tonify the middle burner qi and provide essence from which the fluids can be replenished. They facilitate sweating in a context where fluids may have been damaged by internal heat, while also moderating the drying action of the acrid and warming diaphoretic herbs.
Zhi Gan Cao also functions as a harmonizing herb that pulls the different actions of the formula into a coherent whole.
Sheng Jiang + Da Zao tonify the spleen and stomach and harmonize the nutritive and protective qi. With Zhi Gan Cao, it reinforces the movement and transformation of the middle burner qi.
