What are the symptoms of foreign body in the nose?
Nasal discharge (may become purulent and foul-smelling if present for an extended time).
Nasal pain
Difficulty breathing
Nasal bleeding
What do you assess for?
History of inhalation or insertion of an object.
Nasal obstruction
Discharge characteristics (color, consistency, odor).
Any associated pain or bleeding.
Assess airway involvement → Rule out aspiration or airway obstruction
How is foreign body in the nose diagnosed
clinical examination with direct visualization of the nasal cavity
When is an x-ray or CT scan used
The object is not visible.
It is deeply lodged.
It is suspected to be metallic.
what is the first line removal method?
Encourage sneezing or have the patient blow their nose while closing the opposite nostril.
what do you avoid?
Do NOT irrigate the nose → May push the object backward, causing aspiration or airway obstruction.
When do you consult with HCP?
If sneezing or blowing does not remove the object → Requires professional removal.
How do you prevent foreign object in nose
Avoid inserting objects into the nose.
Keep small objects away from children.
When do you seek medical attention?
Persistent nasal pain
Difficulty breathing
Nasal bleeding
Foul-smelling nasal discharge
