Deviated Septum Flashcards
What is a deviated septum
Displacement of the nasal septum, affecting airflow and sinus drainage.
What causes a deviated septum
Trauma (e.g., nasal fractures from injury).
Congenital (some are born with a naturally off-center septum).
What are the symptoms of a mild deviation
Nasal congestion (one-sided or both).
Frequent sinus infections due to impaired drainage.
What are the signs of a severe deviation
Facial pain due to obstruction pressure.
Epistaxis (nosebleeds) from dryness and irritation.
Nasal obstruction leading to:
Mouth breathing.
Dry mouth.
Snoring.
what is the treatment for mild cases
Saline nasal rinses – moisturize & clear nasal passages.
Decongestants – reduce swelling & improve airflow.
Analgesics – relieve discomfort or pressure.
When is a nasal septoplasty used for severe cases
for severe obstruction, frequent sinus infections, or recurrent nosebleeds.
