Forearm Flashcards
How does supination and pronation occur?
The radius rotates around the ulnar
What holds the ulna and the radius together?
The interossous membrane
How can you tel the difference between the radius and the ulna?
The radius is bigger and longer
What are the bones of the carpals in order?
Scaphoid Lunate Triquetrum Pisiform Trapezium Trapezoid Capitate Hammer
What are the bones of the hand?
Carpals
Metacarpals
Phalanges (proximal, middle and distal)
How many layers are there in the flexor compartment of the forearm
3
4-1=3
How many layers are there in the extensor compartment of the forearm?
2
What is pronation?
Medial rotation
What are the muscles in the outer layer of the flexor compartment?
PASS FAIL PASS FAIL Pronator teres Flexor carpi radialis Palmaris longus Flexor carpi ulnaris
What does the pronator teres do?
Connects the humerus and ulna to the radius
Pronates the arm
What does the flexor carpi radialis do?
Arises medially from the epicondyle and inserts onto the metacarpals
Flexes and abducts the hand
What does the pulmaris longus do?
Not present in everyone
Weak flexor of the wrist
What does the flexor carpi ulnaris do?
Arises from the medial epicondyle of the humerus and inserts onto the carpals
Flexes and adducts the wrist
Which muscle is in the middle layer of the flexor compartment?
Flexor digitorum superficialis
What does the flexor digitorum superficialis do?
Arises from the medial epicondle and inserts onto the proximal phalanges and also the wrist
Flexes middle phalanges at proximal interphalangeal joint
