Food Part 1 Flashcards
Describe difference in expenditure of food between high-income countries and low income countries
High income countries have higher food expenditure due to higher GDP per capita
Lower income families spend greater proportion of income purchasing food. Makes them more vulnerable when food prices increase and may need to consume less food on top of consuming less expensive food
What is the difference in quantity of food consumed between high-income and low-income countries
High-income countries consume higher quantity of food compared to low-income countries
What types of food do high-income countries tend to consume more of
Tend to consume more meat, less fresh fruits and vegetables compared to meat and dairy, more processed food, fast food, snacks, canned food which are high in sodium, fats and sugar
Describe the diet of low-income country
Mostly grains and small amounts of vegetables, fruits and hardly any meat. Calorie intake may not be low due to carbohydrates but diet lacks balanced nutrients
What are three food consumption indicators
Daily calorie intake, food consumption per capita, starchy staples as percentage of all calories
What is food consumption per capita
Average amount of food a person consumes a year, measured in kilogrammes per capita per year
What are economic factors affecting food consumption patterns
Disposable income and food pricing
Describe how disposable income affects food consumption
Higher disposable income means people would be able to consume more food
What caused the food price crisis
Restrictions on export of rice and wheat, bad weather destroyed crops, governments attempted to control price of crops, rising energy prices pushed up transport cost, growing demand for biofuels resulted in farmland being used for biofuel instead of food crops
How does change in food pricing affect LDCs and DCs
People in DCs were not affected much in terms of quantity as they chose less expensive options. People in LDCs are affected in terms of quantity and variety and cut back on non-staple food
What are the sociocultural factors affecting food consumption patterns
Religious beliefs, food preference, migration, population growth
How does religious beliefs affect food consumption
Islam - Consumption of halal food - meat from animal killed in way approved by Islamic law
Buddhism/Hinduism - adoption of vegetarian diet or consumption of little meat due to belief of not hurting animals, mostly South Asia countries
Judaism - Consumption of Kosher foods(like no pig)
How does food preferences affect consumption of food
Increased consumption of fast food due to globalisation in LDCs but rising awareness of ill impacts in DCs.
Increased consumption of organic food in DCs to avoid harmful pesticides and chemicals. Environmental concerns and moral principles affect as well.
How does migration affect food consumption patterns
Migrants may introduce homes cuisines to new country. They may adopt or modify diet according to their country
How does population growth affect food consumption patterns
Greater increasing demand for food in LDCs than DCs due to greater population growth
