Food Chains Flashcards
Importance of producers
- synthesise complex molecules
- source of all the biomass in a community
What are primary consumers
- organisms that eat the producers
What’s a tertiary consumers
- Eats secondary consumer
Define predators
Consumers that kill or eat other animals
What’s a stable community
One where all biotic and abiotic factors are in balance
Two types of sampling
- random
- sampling along a transect
Describe random sampling
- used to compare number of different organisms in different areas
= use a quadrat
= place quadrat on ground and count number of organisms inside the quadrat
Why would we use sampling along a transect
To investigate whether number of species change as we move across a habitat
What’s a transect
A line such as a tape measure or a piece of rope
Describe sampling along a transect
- place transect so it runs across habitat we’re looking at
- use a quadrat to count number of organisms at intervals on the transect
How do microorganisms recycle materials
Microorganisms decay
= releases minerals
Microorganisms respire
= release co2
How do producers work
Always photosynthetic organisms
Through photosynthesis they make glucose
Glucose used to make other biological molecules in plant which make up the biomass
