Endocrine System Flashcards
What does it consist of
Contains glands
= secrete hormones into bloodstream
= spread throughout body
Job of hormones
Some tissues have receptors that are specific to the hormone
= hormone act as signal to trigger changes inside cells
Function of pituitary glands
Tell body what to do or tell other glands to release hormones
Describe thyroid gland
Found in neck
Produces thyroxine
= regulate rate of metabolism and growth and development
What happens when low thyroxine
Pituitary gland detects low levels
= release TSH
= stimulate thyroid to produce more thyroxine
= negative feedback
Describe adrenal glands
Produce adrenaline
= increase heart rate
= more blood pumped
Describe testes
Produce testosterone
= controls puberty
Hold sperm for reproduction
Describe ovaries
Produce oestrogen
= puberty and menstrual cycle
Hold female gametes
= egg cells
Difference of endocrine and nervous
Endocrine
- relies on hormones produced by glands and moved in blood
= hormones spread more slowly and effects last longer
- hormones act more generally
Nervous
- relies of electrical impulses transferred along nerve cells
= impulses spread very fast and effects don’t last long
- impulses sent to one specific area
