Carbon And Water Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
How does the carbon cycle start
A
With co2 in the atmosphere
2
Q
How does carbon enter carbon cycle
A
Through photosynthesis
3
Q
How does carbon return back to atmosphere
A
Aerobic respiration
4
Q
2 key points of carbon cycle
A
- carbon enters atmosphere through photosynthesis
- returns back to atmosphere through respiration
5
Q
Describe the carbon cycle steps
A
- plants and algae take in co2 through photosynthesis
- co2 used to make carbs, fats, proteins
- plants and algae respire
= come carbon released back to atmosphere as co2 - animals eat plants and algae
- animals respire
= some co2 released back to atmosphere - animals produce waste products
= carbon in waste and dead remains
= broken down by decomposing microorganisms
6
Q
Important of decomposers
A
Cycle materials through an ecosystem
7
Q
How are clouds made
A
- energy from sun causes water to evaporate from surface of sea
- water vapour travels into air and cools down
- when it cools water vapour condenses to form clouds
8
Q
A rule of precipitation
A
Only contains fresh water not salt water
9
Q
Importance of plants in water cycle
A
- take up water in their roots
= moves up xylem and passes out stomata as water vapour
10
Q
Importance of animals in water cycle
A
- take up water through drinking and in their food
- release water in urine, faeces and when they exhale
11
Q
Describe process of carbon cycle
A
- co2 diffuses into plants through stomata and used in photosynthesis to make glucose
- glucose made to make plants starch protein etc
= these contain carbon - carbon compounds transferred to other organisms during feeding, then used to make others
- all organisms break down carbon compounds eg glucose during respiration in cells, releasing co2 back into atmosphere
- when animal or plant dies they decompose by microorganisms which use their carbon compounds in respiration while they return mineral ions to the soil
= releasing co2
