Q

What are the Source and Function of Carbohydrates?

A

Source- simple sugars (provide quick energy) or complex starches (provide energy only after they have been broken down by digestive system).

Function- supplies the body with sources of energy and provides roughage which stimulates the muscles of the digestive system and enables the digestive system to work more efficiently.

What are the Digestive System Secretions and Main function of the: Stomach?

A

Stomach secretions = hydrochloric acid, mucus, gastrin, pepsinogen

Stomach Function =

  • stores, mixes, dissolves food,
  • Kills microorganisms,
  • Lubricates & protects stomach lining,
  • Pepsin breaks down peptide bonds
24
Q

What are the Digestive System Secretions and Main function of the: Small Intestine?

A

Small Intestine secretions = Assorted enzymes, mucus, gastrin, secretin, etc.

Main Function =

  • digestion & absorption of most nutrients,
  • Breakdown of all major food molecules,
  • Stimulates HCL secretion,
  • Stimulates bicarbonate secretion,
  • Inhibits stomach acid secretion.
25
Q

What are the Digestive System Secretions and Main function of the: Pancreas?

A

Pancreas secretions = Assorted enzymes and bicarbonate

Main Function =

  • Breakdown all major food molecules,
  • Buffering action neutralizes HCL entering small intestine from stomach,
26
Q

What are the Digestive System Secretions and Main function of the: Liver?

A

Liver secretions = Bile salts

Main Function =

  • Hydration of emulsified fat droplets,
  • Buffering action neutralizes HCL entering small intestine from stomach.
27
Q

What are the Digestive System Secretions and Main function of the: Gall Bladder?

A

Gall Bladder secretions = None

Main Function =
- Stores and concentrates bile from liver.

28
Q

What are the Digestive System Secretions and Main function of the: Large Intestine?

A

Large Intestine secretions = Mucus

Main Function =

  • Stores, concentrates undigested matter by absorbing water and salts,
  • Lubricates undigested residues.
29
Q

What are the Digestive System Secretions and Main function of the: Rectum?

A

Rectum secretions = None

Main Function =
- Trigger mechanism rids body of undigested residues (feces).
