Food Allergy Flashcards
What is allergy?
A hypersensitivity reaction initiated by specific immunological mechanisms - can be IgE mediated or non-IgE mediated
What is an allergen?
Any substance stimulating the production of IgE or a cellular immune response
What is sensitivity?
Normal response to a stimulus
What is hypersensitivity?
Abnormally strong response to a stimulus
What is sensitisation?
Production of IgE antibodies after repeated exposure to an allergen
What is atopy?
A tendency to produce IgE antibodies in response to ordinary exposure to potential allergens
What is anaphylaxis?
A serious allergic reaction with bronchial, laryngeal and cardiovascular involvement that is rapid in onset
What are major food allergens?
Gluten Crustaceans Eggs Milk Nuts Peanuts Soya
How can food allergy presentation be split?
IgE mediated
Non-IgE mediated
What is the symptom onset in IgE mediated?
Immediate - 5-30 mins
What is the symptom onset in non-IgE mediated?
Delayed - hours-days
What are the common foods that trigger IgE mediated?
Milk + eggs
Peanuts
Tree nuts
Fish + shellfish
What are the common foods that trigger non-IgE mediated?
Milk
Soya
Wheat
What are the symptoms of IgE mediated?
Pruritus
Urticaria
Angioedema
Wheeze
What are the symptoms of non-IgE mediated?
Eczema Abdo pain GORD Constipation Loose stools
