Fluid Density and Pressure Flashcards
Fluid
Solids are not, but gas and liquids are (anything that can change it’s shape according to its container)
Density
How much “stuff” is packed into a space. p=m/v
Units: kg/m^3 but, this is not very helpful so we use smaller units like g/mL, g/cm^3 or kg/L
Density of pure water at 4C and 1 atm
1 g/mL or 1 g/cm^3 or 1 kg/L
or 1000 kg/m^3
Specific gravity
Density of a liquid relative to water (a ratio of liquid:water)
-unitless
Fluid pressure
Not limited to fluids
Units of pressure
P=F/A or N/m^2 which is also known as a pascal (pa)
The units of psi
lbs/in^2
1 atm
Standard atmosphere
101,000 pascals
also =760 mmHg = 760 Torr= 14.7 psi = 1 bar (slightly less than an atm)
Hydrostatic pressure`
Psub = (rho)gh
h=height
g=gravity
Absolute pressure
P_abs=P_hydro + P_atm
Gauge pressure
-not standard pressure
P_gauge = P_system - P_atm
