Flight Instruments Flashcards
What are the altitudes indicated in these altimeters:

10,500
14,500
9,500
How do you determine the direction of bank from an attitude indicator?
Note the relationship of the miniature airplane to the deflecting horizon bar.
During level flight, what is the proper adjustment to make on the attitude indicator?
Align the miniature airplane to the horizon bar.
What do you need to do to a heading indicator to receive accurate indications?
Periodically realign it with the magnetic compass as the gyro precesses.
What does a turn coordinator indicate?
Movement of the aircraft about the yaw and roll axes.
What happens if the pitot tube becomes clogged?
The airspeed indicator will become inoperative.
What happens if the static vents become clogged?
The airspeed indicator, altimeter, and vertical speed indicator would be affected, and provide inaccurate readings.
What would happen if both the pitot tube and the static vents became clogged?
The airspeed indicator, altimeter, and vertical speed indicator would provide inaccurate readings.
How do you read an altimeter?
Read the value of each hand individually, starting with the 10,000’s hand. If a hand falls between two numbers, call it the smaller number. Add up the value of the hands.
What is indicated altitude? True altitude? Absolute altitude? Pressure altitude?
Indicated - what your altimeter reads.
True - the vertical distance of the aircraft above sea level.
Absolute - the vertical distance of the aircraft above the surface (AGL).
Pressure - the altitude indicated when the barometric pressure scale is set to 29.92.
What is altimeter setting?
The value to which the barometric pressure scale of the altimeter is set so the altimeter indicates true altitude at field level.
When does indicated altitude equal true altitude?
At sea level with standard conditions.
If you fly from an area of high pressure into an area of lower pressure, without the altimeter setting being adjusted, what would it indicate?
It would indicate higher than the actual altitude.
If you fly from an area of low pressure into an area of higher pressure, without adjusting the altimeter, what would it indicate?
Lower than the actual altitude above sea level.
What happens when you adjust the altimeter pressure setting from a smaller number to a larger number?
The hands will move to larger numbers at a rate of 1,000 feet of indicated altitude for each one inch Hg adjustment in the setting window.
If you adjust the altimeter from 29.15 to 29.85, what will the altimeter indicate?
700 feet higher.
How can you find pressure altitude?
Set 29.92” Hg in the window, and read the pressure altitude from the hands.
How do warm days affect pressure levels and indicated altitude?
Pressure levels are raised and indicated altitude is lower than true altitude.
What does air warmer than standard cause the altimeter to indicate?
A lower altitude than true altitude.
In colder than standard air temperature, how is the altimeter affected?
The indicated altitude will be higher than true altitude.
When is the magnetic compass accurate during flight?
Only in straight-and-level unaccellerated flight.
What are acceleration and deceleration errors (Northern Hemisphere)?
ANDS
Accelerate
North
Decelerate
South
If an aircraft is accelerated while on an easterly or westerly heading, the compass will indicate north. If decelerated, it will indicate south.
What is compass dip error (Northern Hemisphere)?
NO
North opposite.
If on a heading of north, you start a turn to the east or west, the compass momentarily indicates a turn in the opposite direction.
If a left turn is entered from a north heading, what will the compass momentarily indicate?
A turn toward the east.
What causes deviation in a magnetic compass?
The magnetic fields within the aircraft, distorting the lines of magnetic force.
