Communications and Radar Services Flashcards
What is ATIS?
Automatic Terminal Information Service: continuous broadcast of recorded information concerning noncontrol information in high-activity terminal areas.
What does the absence of sky conditions and visibility on an ATIS broadcast indicate?
Ceiling is at least 5,000 feet, and visibility is at least 5 miles.
How do you state altitudes?
Pronounce each digit in the thousands, and say the number of hundreds with one digit.
How is the CTAF frequency indicated on a chart?
With a C in a circle. If the airport is uncontrolled, it’s magenta. If it has a part-time tower, it’s blue.
When should pilots of inbound traffic use the CTAF?
- 10 miles out
- On downwind
- On base
- On final
- Clear of runway
When should pilots of departing aircraft use the CTAF?
From start-up until 10 miles from the airport, with specific calls before initial taxi and before taxiing on the runway.
If there is FSS on field, what will they provide?
Traffic advisories.
What is the area within 10 miles of an airport with FSS but no control tower called?
Airport Advisory Area.
What should a pilot do prior to entering an Airport Advisory Area?
Contact the local FSS for airport and traffic advisories.
When an FSS and a control tower are located at the same airport, and the tower closes, what happens?
The FSS provides Airport Advisory Service.
What is the VFR transponder code at all altitudes?
1200
If you are departing Class C airspace, and ATC says that radar service is terminated, what should you squawk?
1200
What are the transponder codes for lost communications, emergency, and hijack?
7600, 7700, 7500
When ATC issues radar traffic information, how do they do it?
In relation to a 12-hour clock, in reference to the aircraft’s ground track.
What does basic radar service include?
Safety alerts, traffic advisories, and limited radar vectoring to VFR aircraft.
