Flight Controls Flashcards
Which hydraulic system(s) normally power the primary flight controls?
System A or B can operate all of the primary flight controls.
The active system is determined by the active FCC, determined by:
- Side of active autopilot, or
- Side which activated the flight director first
A small green annunciator exists on the MCP, “MA”
Captain side –> system A
FO side –> system B
Loss of hydraulic systems A and B render which spoiler panels inoperative?
The loss of both A and B hydraulic systems is manual reversion and therefore renders ALL spoiler panels inoperative
How do ailerons and elevators operate with the loss of both hydraulic system A and B?
The ailerons and elevators are operated through mechanical linkage
What happens when the FLT CONTROL A switch is positioned to STBY RUD?
Standby hydraulic system activated, and
Opens the standby rudder shutoff valve (allowing standby hydraulics to power the standby rudder PCU)
What powers the rudder during manual reversion?
Standby hydraulic system
What are the roll control surfaces? How are they powered?
Ailerons and roll spoilers
Both are hydraulically powered [ailerons do have manual reversion]
What happens when a single aileron trim switch is pushed?
Nothing, both trim switches have to be pushed in the same direction to activate the trim
Why is aileron trim prohibited with the autopilot engaged?
It can result in an out-of-trim condition when the autopilot is disengaged
How many degrees of control wheel displacement initiates spoiler deflection?
Spoiler deflection is initiated at approximately 10 degrees of control wheel displacement
Which flight control switch(es) are used for maintenance purposes only?
The SPOILER A/B switches are used for maintenance purposes only
With a jammed/restricted aileron or roll spoiler system, how is roll controlled?
If the ailerons or spoilers are jammed, force applied to the captain’s or first officer’s control wheels will identify which system is usable
Captain’s yoke –> ailerons
FO’s yoke –> spoilers
What does an illuminated FEEL DIFF PRESS light (amber) indicate?
Excessive differential pressure within the elevator feel computer
How does actuating the stabilizer trim switch on the control wheel affect autoflight?
Automatically disengages the autopilot
What is the purpose of the STAB TRIM switches on the aft electronic panel?
Switch to Override and then electric trim works regardless of yoke position
What does the green band on the STAB TRIM indicator mean?
Takeoff trim range
A takeoff warning horn sounds if the stab trim is outside this range during takeoff
What does an illuminated SPEED TRIM FAIL light (amber), during MASTER CAUTION recall, indicate?
Failure of a single channel of the speed trim system
Describe the functions of the Stall Management Yaw Damper (SMYD) computers
Stall warnings,
- Stick shaker,
- Pitch limit indicator and airspeed tape warnings, and
- GPWS windshear detection and alert
Yaw damping
Which light is armed by selecting FLT CONTROL A or B switch to STBY RUD?
LOW PRESSURE for standby hydraulics
During landing, when do ground or flight spoilers deploy?
Wheel spin for flight spoilers,
Right main gear compress for ground spoilers
What would cause the LE FLAPS TRANSIT light (amber) to illuminate?
Any LE device in transit, or
Any LE device not in programmed position with respect to TE flaps, or
LE uncommanded motion, or
LE devices not in commanded position
When does the main rudder PCU limit full rudder authority?
Speed > 135kts
If you are OEI then full rudder authority is available
What does the rudder trim control switch do?
Rudder is electrically trimmed in the desired direction
What flap settings have flap load relief?
Flaps 10-40
How do you activate the standby yaw damper?
Both FLT CONTROL A and B switches to STBY RUD
What are the positions of the speed brake lever? Limitations?
Down,
Armed,
Flight Detent,
UP
In flight, do not go beyond Fight Detent
Do not use speed brakes with flaps extended (ASA lim)
What does the SPEED BRAKE DO NOT ARM light (amber) indicate?
Abnormal condition or test inputs to the automatic speed brake system
What is the normal position for LE flaps for each FLAP lever position?
Full extend for flaps 1-40
[Question said LE flaps not LE slats/devices]
When do LE slats deploy to FULL EXTEND?
SFP aircraft
Beyond flaps 25
Non-SFP aircraft
Beyond flaps 5
When and how do the auto slats operate?
When the aircraft approaches stall and the LE slats are in the extend position, the LE slats fully extend
What does an AUTO SLAT FAIL light (amber) illumination during Master Caution Recall indicate?
Failure of a single stall management yaw damper (SMYD) computer
Which devices move when the alternate flaps switch is placed in the DOWN position? UP position? Which system(s) move these devices?
DOWN - LE devices and TE flaps
UP - TE flaps (LE devices only if you have B hydraulics)
Leading edge devices - standby hydraulics
Trailing edge flaps - electric motor
