CPR procedure

A

Ensure that the victim is lying on their back on a firm flat surface and then:

  1. Kneel at the side of the victim (between the shoulder and the head)
  2. Place the heel of one hand on the center of the victim’s bare chest between the nipples
  3. Place the heel of your other hand on the top of the first hand
  4. Straighten your arms and position your shoulders directly over your hands
  5. `Push hard and push fast. Press the chest 5 cm (2 inches) downward with each compression. Shallow compressions may not produce adequate blood flow
  6. At the end of each compression, ensure that you allow the chest to recoil or re-expand completely. An incomplete chest recoil will reduce the blood-flow
  7. Deliver compressions at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute and,

Check for breathing

A

(take at least 5 seconds but no more than 10 secs)

  1. Look for the chest to rise and fall
  2. Feel for breaths on your skin
  3. Listen for the sound of breathing
  4. If there is no breathing, give 2 normal breaths

Performing Mouth-to-Mouth Breathing

A
  1. Pinch the nose closed with your thumb and index finger
  2. Take a normal breath and tightly seal your lips around the victim’s mouth
  3. Give one breath (blow for 1 second). Watch for the chest to rise.
  4. Give a second breath. Watch for the chest to rise.
