Firefighting Fundamentals Flashcards
What is the firefighter’s primary duty?
saving lives
What is the firefighter’s secondary duty?
extinguish fires and limit damage to aircraft, shipboard, airfield installed equipment and airfield structures
What are the key elements of a fire?
heat
fuel
oxygen
chemical chain reaction
Explain the fire tetrahedron.
research in the past 30 years has indicated the presence of a fourth element, chemical chain reaction, it allows the fire to both sustain itself and grow.
What are the four classes of fire?
Class Alpha
Class Bravo
Class Charlie
Class Delta
What is a class alpha fire?
Combustable materials that produce an ash such as wood and wood products, cloth, textiles and fibrous materials, and paper products.
What is a class bravo fire?
Flammable liquid substances such as gasoline, jet fuel, oil, and other petroleum based products.
What is a class charlie fire?
Energized electrical fires
What is a class delta fire?
Combustable metals such as magnesium and titantium.
Class alpha extinguishing agent?
H20 and AFFF
Class bravo extinguishing agent?
AFFF, Halon 1211, PKP, and CO2
Class charlie extinguishing agent?
Extinguished by non-conductive agents:
- Energized. co2, halon, pkp and h20 fog 4feet minimum away
- De-energized. treat as class A, B or D
Class delta extinguishing agent?
large quatities of h20 fog at high velocity, small explosion may occur keep safe distance or behind shelter
What is AFFF?
Aqueous film forming foam.
Noncorrosive and have an unlimited shelf life. Naval approved use of 3 percent and 6 percent
What is H20?
Water.
Not generally considered suitable for large aircraft fuel fires without additive foam agents or surfactants. Is effective agent for cooling aircraft fuselage, provide heat shield for personnel, cooling ordenance, batteries and class A fires.
