Airfield and Fligh Deck Familiarization Flashcards
What are the safety guidlines for airfield/flightline and the flight deck?
Safety concerns are the same for flight line and flight deck. Jet blast, rotor arcs, propellers and jet intakes are potentially life threatening. Being FOD free, wearing PPE, being qualified, and keeping head on a swivel are essential.
What safety PPE is required on the flight line?
Flight deck (steel toed) safety shoes
Cranial impact helmet
Protective eye goggles
Leather gloves
What are runways?
paved areas that are used for aircraft takeoff and landing.
What are threshold markings?
Parallel stripes on the ends of runways designating the landing area.
What is the overrun area?
Paved or un-paved section on the ends of runways that provide a reasonably effective deceleration area for aborting or overshooting aircraft.
What is the MA-1 Series overrunn barrier?
Designed to stop tricycle landing gear equipped aircraft not equipped with tail hooks. Always in standby.
What is emergency shore based recovery equipment?
In-flight emergencies that requires stopping the aircraft in the shortest distance possible to minimize chance of injury to pilot, crew or aircraft damage
What are taxiways?
Paved areas for aircraft to move between parking aprons, runways and airfield services
What is a parking apron?
Open paved areas adjacent to hangers, fuel, services often called the flight line.
What is the compass calibration pad?
Compass Rose
A paved area in a magnetically quiet area where the aircraft compass is calibrated.
What is the runway numbering system?
Runways are numbered in relation to their magnetic heading. Runways that are parallel are identified with a L (left), R (right) and C (center) in front of the number.
What is the airfield rotating beacon?
When the airport is below VFR weather conditions, day or night, the beacon is used to identify the airports location. Military airfields use 2 white lights and green flash.
What are the safety concerns while working on the flight deck?
Oil, grease, and fuel which create slip hazards. Jet intakes and ekhaust, rotor and propellers arcs are life threatening present during flight operations.
The required flightdeck protective equipment includes?
Flightdeck (steel-toed) safety boots Protective jersey Cranial impact helmet Protective eye goggles Leather gloves
What are the seven protective jerseys used on the flight deck?
Yellow White Brown Blue Green Red Purple
