What is the process for firearm submissions when FIS attends an active crime scene involving firearms?
FIS will seize or receive all firearms, ammunition, casings and projectiles. Members of FIS will turn the seized items over to the Laboratory Section of FIS for identification testing and examination. The seized items will then be forwarded to FIA for further testing, analysis and investigation. A CFS 1.4 will be completed by the FIA investigator and submitted with the seized items to the Centre of Forensic Sciences (CFS).
Who does the FIA investigator forward firearms reports to?
the respective case manager
whose duties include:
- ensure liaison is maintained with, and all possible assistance is given to, divisional investigators dealing with firearm investigations, investigations into firearms trafficking and/or smuggled firearms and investigations into illegally possessed firearms
- assume the lead in multi–jurisdictional investigations into firearms trafficking and/or smuggled firearms after consultation with the divisional investigator
