What systems on the aircraft have fire protection?
Fire detection and extinguishing systems are provided for the engines and the Auxiliary Power Unit.
Smoke detection and fire extinguishing systems are provided for the forward and aft baggage compartments, and the lavatory.

What are the cockpit indications of an engine fire?
An engine fire is indicated in the flight compartment by the illumination of the following FIVE fire warning lights:
· The respective engine’s PULL FUEL/HYD OFF T-handle light (red) on the FPP
· The Master Warning light (flashing red) on the glareshield
· The CHECK FIRE DET warning light (flashing red) on the warning light panel
· Both ENGINE FIRE PRESS TO RESET lights (flashing red) on the left and right sides of the glareshield

What does the SMOKE warning indicate?
Smoke detected in either the forward or aft baggage compartments will be indicated in the flight compartment on the Fire Protection Panel.

The Q400 has a fire warning tone in the event of an engine fire. How do you
silence the tone?
Pushing the Captain’s ENGINE FIRE PRESS TO RESET light (left side, as the test requires) will silence the fire warning tone and stop the flashing of the ENGINE FIRE PRESS TO RESET lights.
Pushing the First Officer’s ENGINE FIRE PRESS TO RESET light (right side, as the test requires) will silence the fire warning tone and stop the flashing of the ENGINE FIRE PRESS TO RESET lights.

How many baggage compartment High Rate fire bottles are there?
2, one in each baggage compartment SDM 8-10
How many baggage compartment Low Rate fire bottles are there?
The forward and aft baggage compartments share the low rate fire extinguisher bottle.

What indications are associated with smoke in the FWD bag compartment?
When smoke is sensed in the forward baggage compartment, a momentary warning tone (the Master Warning chime) is activated in the flightdeck and the following lights/switchlights illuminate:
· Master Warning light (flashing red) and chime
· SMOKE warning light (flashing red)
· BAGGAGE FWD SMOKE/EXTG switchlight (red/white, guarded) located on the lower right portion of the FPP
· FIRE BOTTLE FWD ARM indication light (amber) on the FPP

What indications, if any, would you have for a fire in the lavatory?
If smoke is sensed in the lavatory, the smoke detector alarm activates and the cabin repeater lights illuminate. There are no visible or aural indications in the flightdeck when smoke is sensed in the lavatory. Automatic extinguishing of the lavatory trash bin.
