VOL 2 / 8.1.1
Explain the meaning of the FAULT light on the Overheat/Fire Protection panel
With the OVHT DET switch in NORMAL - the FAULT light indicates BOTH detector loops for an engine have failed.
If ONE loop fails with the OVHT DET switch in NORMAL, that loop is automatically deselected and the remaining loop functions as a single loop detector. There is NO flight deck indication of single loop failure.
With the overheat detector switch in A or B - the FAULT light indicates the selected loop for that engine has failed.
Note: MASTER CAUTION and OVHT?DET system annunciator lights do NOT illuminate for a FAULT light
Illuminated red:
- indicates fire in related engine
- unlocks related engine fire warning switch
- Master FIRE WARN lights illuminate and fire warning bell sounds
In normal position:
- mechanically locked if no fire signal
Up:
- arms one discharge squib on each fire extinguisher
- allows engine fire warning switch to rotate
Rotate (left or right):
- discharges related fire bottle
VOL 2 / 8.1.3
Explain the meaning of the APU DET INOP light
Indicates the APU detector loop has failed.
MASTER CAUTION and OVHT/DET system annunciator lights illuminate
Illuminated red:
- indicates fire in related engine
- unlocks related engine fire warning switch
- Master FIRE WARN lights illuminate and fire warning bell sounds
In normal position:
- mechanically locked if no fire signal
Up:
- arms one discharge squib on each fire extinguisher
- allows engine fire warning switch to rotate
Rotate (left or right):
- discharges related fire bottle
VOL 2 / 8.1.3
Explain the meaning of an illuminated DETECTOR FAULT light on the Cargo Fire panel
One or more of the selected detector loop(s) in either cargo compartment has failed
Illuminated red:
- indicates fire in related engine
- unlocks related engine fire warning switch
- Master FIRE WARN lights illuminate and fire warning bell sounds
In normal position:
- mechanically locked if no fire signal
Up:
- arms one discharge squib on each fire extinguisher
- allows engine fire warning switch to rotate
Rotate (left or right):
- discharges related fire bottle
VOL 2 / 8.1.4
Explain the function of the Detector Select (DET SELECT) switches on the Cargo Fire Panel
NORM - detection loop A and B are active
A - detection loop A is active
B - detection loop B is active
Note: the system can be manually converted to single-loop detection through the DETECT SELECT switch on the cargo fire control panel. In the event of a power failure in one loop, the system automatically converts to single-loop detection
Illuminated red:
- indicates fire in related engine
- unlocks related engine fire warning switch
- Master FIRE WARN lights illuminate and fire warning bell sounds
In normal position:
- mechanically locked if no fire signal
Up:
- arms one discharge squib on each fire extinguisher
- allows engine fire warning switch to rotate
Rotate (left or right):
- discharges related fire bottle
VOL 2 / 8.1.4
Recall the indications of an engine fire warning
- Related engine fire warning switch illuminates
- Both master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
- The fire warning bell sounds
- All related engine overheat alert indications illuminate (aka both master caution lights with an OVHT/DET annunciator)
VOL 2 / 8.2.2.1
Recall the indications of an APU fire warning
- APU fire warning bell sounds
- Both master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
- The APU fire switch illuminates
- The APU automatically shuts down
- The wheel well APU fire warning horn sounds (on the ground only), and the wheel well APU fire warning light flashes (in the right wheel well, not in the flight deck)
Note: the APU automatically shuts down (all related APU FAULT light indications illuminate)
VOL 2 / 8.2.3.1
Recall the indications of a Cargo Fire Warning
- The Fire Warning Bell sounds
- Both Master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
- The FWD/AFT Cargo fire warning light(s) illuminate (on the cargo fire panel on center console)
Note: No master caution lights
VOL 2 / 8.2.5.2
Explain the meaning of an illuminated Fire Bottle Discharge light
Indicates related fire extinguisher bottle has discharged
VOL 2 / 8.1.3
Recall the number of fire extinguishing bottles available for Engine, APU and the Cargo compartments
Engine - 2 extinguishing bottles (total, 2 for 1 engine or 1 for each engine)
APU - 1 extinguishing bottle
Cargo - 1 extinguishing bottle
Note: some aircraft, mainly for ETOPS, have 2 cargo extinguishing bottles which is what I’m used to - also noted in 8.2.5.3
VOL 2 / 8.2.2.2 & 8.2.3.2 & 8.2.5.3
True or False:
With the engine overheat deterctor switches in NORMAL, the FAULT light will illuminate when BOTH detector loops for an engine have failed
TRUE
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
What is the meaning of an engine L or R BOTTLE DISCHARGE light on the OVERHEAT/FIRE protection panel?
Related fire bottle has been discharged
Note: Related fire bottle squib is armed when the engine FIRE WARN light comes on the handle.
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
Pulling the engine fire warning switch UP:
select all that apply
- arms one discharge squib on each engine fire extinguisher
- allows the engine fire warning switch to rotate (unlocks the handle)
Engine fire warning switch doesn’t do anything with the cargo fire system.
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
The NORM position of the Detector Select switch on the Cargo Fire panel is used to:
Activate detection loops A and B
Note: there’s two loops per cargo compartment and you want both working for redundancy. If it’s on both, they both are functioning. You can isolate A and B to determine if one is broken but it’s usually on both.
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
The indications of an APU fire is:
All of the above:
- The fire warning bell sounds
- both master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
- the APU fire warning switch illuminates
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
How is an APU detector loop failure indicated on the Overheat/Fire Protection panel?
APU DET INOP light illuminated
Note: that light does NOT flash. FAULT light is for the engine detector loops, no the APU
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
The APU Fire Warning switch in the up position:
Select all answers that apply
- Arms the APU extinguisher circuit (any lit up fire handle arms the fire extinguishers!! they say fire “switches” but they are damn handles)
- allows the APU fire warning switch to rotate (any lit up fire handle “unlocks” the handle and allows it to rotate!!)
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
What are the indications of an engine fire warning?
Select all that apply
- Both MASTER FIRE WARNING lights illuminate
- Fire warning bell sounds
- Related Engine Fire Warning switch (handle) illuminates
The cargo fire extinguishing system consists of ___ cargo fire extinguisher bottle (s)
1
Note: unless it has 2. ha.
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
A failed detector during a cargo fire test indicated by:
An illuminated DETECTOR FAULT light.
Note: the light does NOT flash.
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
What are the indications of an engine overheat? aka FIRE.
All of the above.
- The related ENG OVERHEAT light illuminates
- The OVHT/DET system annunciator light illuminates
- Both MASTER CAUTION lights illuminate
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
The indications of a cargo fire warning is:
All of the above.
- The fire warning bell sounds
- The FWD/AFT cargo fire warning light(s) illuminates
- Both master FIRE WARN lights illuminate
Note: MASTER CAUTION lights don’t illuminate for cargo fires. Guess it’s not that important baha
ESV-SA: Fire Protection
What is NOT an indication of an engine fire warning?
- ENG light illuminated on the recall panel
Note: master recall is for single faults/failures that aren’t a total failure of a system. An engine fire warning is a big deal, to big o deal for just a master recall.
