Psychiatric disorder
Clinically significant behavior of psychological pattern that occurs in an individual associated with distress and/or impairment in functioning
Psychosis
Presence of hallucinations and/or delusions
Positive symptoms
“Things that are there that shouldn’t be”
Negative symptoms
“Things that aren’t there that should be”
Positive symptoms of psychosis
Delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech
Negative symptoms of psychosis
Diminished emotional expression or avolition
Illusion
Misperception of actual stimuli; non-pathologic
Hallucination
Presence of a perception in absence of stimuli; patholigic
Delusion
A fixed, false, culturally inappropriate thought of belief
Obsession
Intrusive thought, image, or urge that is repetitive, unwanted, and in a moment of quiet reflection seen as ego-dystonic
Disorganization
Loosening of associations; can progress to word salad
Compulsion
Behavior aimed at reducing obsession or general anxiety
Self injurious behavior
Behavior aimed at self harm such as cutting, pinching, burning, scratching; often aimed at reducing anxiety or attempting to “feel”
Suicidality
Behavior aimed at terminating one’s own life
Mood
Stable and prolonged state of mind or emotion
