FINALS MOD 6 Flashcards
It is one of the greatest
inventions in our history. It
is the most manageable
form of media.
Text
The word text originated from the Latin texere or _______
“to weave”
It refers to texts that contain no
formatting, the plaintext is a set of
data that is about to be encrypted.
- They contain codes for font changes, headers, footers, bold, italic, and other page and document attributes.
Plain Text
spaces between fonts
kerning
They link topics on the screen to
related information and
graphics, which are typically
accessed by a point-and-click
method (Lexico).
Hypertext
It is an unformatted text document created by an editor, such as Notepad
TXT (Text)
It was developed by Adobe for cross platform exchange of documents that supports images and graphics
PDF (Portable Document Format)
(who?) visual communication happens only when there is an effective mix of both information in part (broken down and detailed) and whole
Dennis Dake
________ are those that show real-world situations captured by a camera
Images
___ those that were drawn or painted through digital or traditional means
Graphics
________ are printed on solid surfaces
Hard Copy
_____ transformed from hard copy into the electronic form
Soft Copy Images
- also known as continuous tone images, composed of a large number of varying tones or shades of colors
Continuous Tone, Half-tone, and Bitone Photographs
Color Spectrum
Primary (red, blue, yellow)
Intermediate or tertiary (orange-red, blue-green)
Analogous (next to each other)
Complementary (opposites)
4 attributes of colors
Hue (unique color name)
Value (lightness or darkness)
Intensity (saturation or amount of pigment)
Temperature (warm and cool)
This is the number of pixels
along the height and width
of a bitmap image.
Pixel Dimensions
This is the number of pixels
displayed per unit length of
an image, which is usually
measured in pixels per inch
(ppi).
Image Resolution
- When using computers that are compatible to DOS and Windows, this is the standard image format.
- It supports RGB, indexed color, grayscale, and
bitmap color modest except alpha channels.
BMP (Bitmap)
It is commonly used to display
photographs and other continuous-
tone images in hypertext markup
language (HTML)
JPEG (Joint Photographers
Expert Group)
This is commonly used to display indexed-color graphics and images in HTML documents over the internet and other online services.
It preserves transparency in indexed-color images, except alpha channels.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)
Developed as a patent-free alternative to GIF, it is used for lossless compression and for display of images on the internet.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
this format was designed by Aldus
Corporation and Microsoft in 1987. It is used to exchange files between
applications and computer platforms.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
It is widely used among MAC OS graphics and page-layout applications as an intermediary file format for transferring images between applications. This format
supports RGB images with a single alpha channel and indexed color, grayscale, and bitmap mode images without alpha channels.
PICT (Picture)
This format is designed for systems
using the True vision video board and
is commonly supported by MS DOS
color applications.
TGA (Targa)
It is the default format used in the Adobe Photoshop package and the only format supporting all available image modes
PSD (Photoshop Document)
This function refers to the salient features of visuals, such as
static art, dynamic art, and true virtual reality. It focuses on what
illustrations look like and how they are created.
Surface Features
It focuses on how graphics convey information. The communication aims to show motion or represent/illustrate
quantitative relationships.
Communication Function
It focuses on how graphics facilitate human learning processes.
Psychological Functions
______ literally means “l hear” in
Latin. The term pertains to any
signal, sound, waveform, and
others that can be heard, as
distinguished from ultrasonic
sound, radio-frequency signals,
or video signals.
Audio
It refers to how sound particles are displaced or scattered that produce a certain level or intensity of
loudness.
Amplitude
It is the number of successive compressions and rarefactions occurring in one second and is expressed in hertz (Hz).
Frequency
Increases as the frequency rises,
Pitch
Describes the dimensional length of each cycle or movement in
periodic motion.
Wave Length
It is the process of taking unrelated parts and putting them together into an organized unit.
Design
_____ is the measure of the grace and simplicity of the design relative to the
complexity of its functions.
Elegance
Refers to a closed space made when a line connects to itself.
Shape
Is defined by two lines that do not coincide or by a minimum of three points that are not located on a line.
Surface
Refers to a shape that is or appears to be 3D, having weight, width, and depth.
Form
It is the area that an object or design occupies or the area around, above, below, within, or between elements in a design.
Space
It help define parts of objects
and set off one area of a
design from another.
Color
It is the lightness or darkness
of a color, image or part of an
image, or area.
Value
Relates to the surface of an object (the feel, appearance, thickness, or stickiness of a surface)
Texture
It refers to the visual tempo or
beat that creates a mood, such
as music or dancing.
Rhythm
Is also referred to as symmetry
Balance
(Balance) - when one side of something is the same as the other side
Symmetrical (formal)
(Balance) - when the emphasis is to the right or the left of the center or dissimilar on both sides
Asymmetrical (informal) or Radial
It is the focal point in your design.
Emphasis
It is a successful combination of
design elements that creates a
sense of wholeness and visual
completion.
Unity
It refers to the unity created when the parts of the design relate to the whole
Proportion
It is the use o several elements
of design to create differences
that add visual interest.
