with achlorhydria (lack of
hydrochloric acid of stomach)
TREATMENT OF CHOICE FOR DIPHYLLOBOTHRIASIS?
Praziquantel
o 5-10 mg/kg single dose
Criteria for recovery FOR DIPHYLLOBOTHRIASIS?
o Recovery of scolex in the feces after treatment
o If the scolex is not recovered, a repeat stool examination is done after 3 months
IDENTIFY:
- Scolex: minute, subglobular, with four
acetabula
- Rostellum: two alternating circular rows of 90-140 hammer-shaped hooks
- Number of ova per gravid proglottid: 2mm
in length with 200-400 egg capsules with
one to four spindle shaped eggs
- Length: 60cm
- Strobila: detachment by apolypsis
- Oncosphere of the egg has two thin membranes: one is outer elongated membrane and second is inner spherical membrane
Raillietina garrisoni
IDENTIFY:
- Scolex: small and globular, with four deeply cupped suckers
- Rostellum: protrusible, club-shaped, armed with one to seven rows of rose thorn-shaped hooklets/spines
- Segments: bilateral genital pores
o Gravid segments detach in the strobila and may migrate to anus or passed through feces
- Length: 10-70cm
- Color: PALE REDDISH
- Proglottids: narrow with two sets of male
and female reproductive organs with bilateral genital pores
Dipylidium caninum
IDENTIFY:
- Scolex: SPATULATE, two bothria (ALMOND SHAPED sucking grooves, located dorsally and ventrally)
o measures 2 to 3 mm in length by 1 mm in diameter
- Rostellum: UNARMED
- Segments: DARK, ROSETTE-like coiled uterus
o Disintegrates after completion of reproductive function
o Gravid: wider than long (measures 2 to 4 mm in length by 10 to 12 mm in width)
