Final Exam - Chp 8 Flashcards
how is training defined
providing workers with the knowledge, skills or behaviours to reduce the risk of a workplace injury
what is learning
the process wherein we acquire knowledge and skills that can lead to behavioural change
what is behaviorism
asserts that attaching rewards and punishments to specific worker actions can shape how workers behave
what are two types of learning theories
behaviourism and social cognition
what is positive reinforcement
rewarding a worker when the worker demonstrates a desired behaviour in order to elicit further instances of the desired behaviour
what is negative reinforcement
removing some sort of undesirable stimulus (I.e. yelling) when a worker demonstrates a desired behaviour
what is the value of behaviourism
it draws our attention to the fact that rewards and punishment affect learning and that this effect occurs both during and after the training process - this training tells us they will most likely continue behaviour if mocked by coworkers or hassled by supervisors
what is social cognition theory
that learning occurs through observation and imitation and thus through formal and informal interactions with others. begins by workers observing how others act and the consequences of those action. Often suggests workers are often able to manage their own safety behaviours through self-monitoring, self-evaluation and self-rewarding.
Instructional design
process of systematically developing training to meet particular goals and objectives
what is the instructional design process
access training needs - organizational goals
plan training program - objectives, methods, trainers
implement training program
evaluate training results
what are 4 types of training outcomes that can be assessed
reaction - satisfaction with venue, content and activiites - subjective, hard to tell if training met objectives (questionnaire)
Learning: quizzes, demonstrations, measure knowledge through testing, measure short term measures of training outcomes,
Behaviour: training seeks to alter behaviours, measuring over time useful, through observations
Results: measures, may not always be due to training. objective measures
Behavioural Based Training Pitfalls
BBS - views the workplace as a venue to measurable behaviou, focuses on modifying worker behaviour via training reinforced positive and negative feeback. Safety metrics link to pizza
Issue is that it focuses soley on the employee’s behaviour and not the workplace root cause factors
what are 3 major phases to any emergency plan
- activation: recognize emergency, activate plan& communicate to workers and any relevant authorities
- evacuation, rescue or shelter: require evacuation routes, muster points, storm may cause ee to take shelter, shutdown of certain workprocesses
- Ongoing Management: managing an ongoing emergency by secure equipment & info, means of communication, media relations plan, assistance to help ee’s cope with their reaction to the event
