what is stress
a change in our physical and mental state in response to situations we perceive as challenging or threatening
what are 4 types of stressors
- acute - time specific event of high intensity and short duration & occur infrequently ie performance review, car accident
- episodic (daily) - occur more frequently, similar to acute , but longer in duration and lower intensity
- Chronic - persist over a sustained period of time , job insecurity
- Catastrophic - subset of acute but more intense, life threatening robbery, assaults
what are 5 factors contributing to workplace stress
- characteristics of job being performed
- workers level of responsibility
- job (in)security, career development
- interpersonal relationships at work
- overall org structure and climate
what is Robert Karasek job demands-control model
the degree of control a worker has in her job plays a significant role in whether job related stress will be positive or negative , low strain, active, passive, high strain
what are the 2 main challenges associated with recognizing workplace stress as a hazard?
- stress is perceived as an individuals response to a situation, and any 2 individuals can reach differently to the same stressors.
- Isolating workplace stressors can be difficult, non work stressor affect workers , employers can blame that. WCB is more likely to accept a claim resulting from catastrophic stress rather than acute or chronic
what is workplace violence
any act in which a person is abused, threatened , intimidated, or assaulted in his or her employment. physical attack , threats, threatening language or behaviours
bullying & harassment different from violence
emotional & psychological harm instead of physical
what are 4 categories of bullies
- Screaming Mimi - mood swings & unpredictable behaviour
- constant critic - point out others inadequacies & errors
- two headed snake - aimed at rising in the organization, bully those below them uses rumours
- gatekeeper- obsessed with control- hold things to ensure target’s failure
what are the responses to harmful work environment?
- Exit: the worker decided to get away from the undesired situation, either by quitting or transferring
- Voice: worker speaks up in attempt to change situation
- Patience: worker does nothing in the hopes that the situation will eventually improve. this occurs when their loyalty or the cost of exiting is greater than the price of experience the negative situation.
- Neglect: worker does nothing based on the belief the situation will not change, may try and avoid but take not action.
why is working alone a psycho social hazard
- the absence of other people , out of contact with persons capable of offering assistance in case of emergency, can be working alone even if there are other people around , post man, barista opening coffee shop, home care nurse.
how do you control hazard of working alone
eliminate it, prohibiting late night overtime, policies in place citing 2 persons on the job, establish 2 step communication
