Final Exam - Chp 3 Flashcards
what is hazard recognition
systematic task of identifying all hazards present or potentially present in a workplace
what is hazard assessment
workers & employers determine which of the hazards needs to be addressed most urgently
what is hazard control
this process sees preventive & correction measures implemented to eliminate or mitigate the effect of the hazard
what is the difference between and accident and incident
accident is most often used to mean an event that leads to some degree of harm. Incident is any undesired event that leads to or could have led to harming workers
what are the 5 broad categories of hazard
physical hazard, ergonomic hazard, chemical, biological, psycho-social hazard
what is a physical hazard
- physical hazard: entail a transfer of energy from an object i.e. box falling off a shelf , which results in injury. Most widely recognized hazard and include contact with equipment, working at heights, noise, vibration, temperature, electricity, atmospheric condition
what is an ergonomic hazard
a result of the interaction of work design & the human body such as work station design, tool shape, repetitive work, requirements sit/stand , considered subset of physical hazard
what is a chemical hazard
cause harm to human tissue or interfere with normal physiological functioning. Burns/disorientation short term, long term - cancer& lead poisoning.
what is a biological hazard
organisms such as bacteria, mold funguses that harm human health
what is a psycho -social hazard
social, environmental & psychological factors that can affect human health& safety.Harassment, violence, stress and mental fatigue.
what are some hazard identification techniques
- inspect the workplace, 2. talk with workers, 3. job inventory,4. records & data, 5. measuring & testing, 6. Research
what does a risk assessment do?
quantifies the likelihood of injury or ill health by assessing the probability -likelihood hazard will result in incident
consequences - severity of injury/ill heath caused by incident
exposure - frequency workers contact the hazard
what are the hierarchy of controls that have been established
- Elimination
- Substitution
- Engineering Controls - modifications to the workplace, equipment, materials or workprocesses
- Adminstrative controls - changes to work process, policies, training
- PPE - least effective
