Final Exam - Chp 4 Flashcards
what are 3 characteristics of noise
- Frequency: pitch of noise
- Duration: length of time a worker is exposed to the noise
- Loudness: noise of 85db is hazardous
why are some physical agents difficult to identify
they sometimes hide in plain sight. worker’s behaviours are so rountinized that hazard is almost invisible
what are shortcomings of noise control
- the use of dB(A) partially addresses the issue of frequency, regulations do not adequately address the health effects of short, intense, and high frequency sounds
- Insufficient evidence to determine if an exposure at 85 db every day of a period of many years is safe
- Rules don’t account for individual variation
why might noise & vibration exposure appear together
measured in similar way, require a specialized meter to detect intensity, measure real time level - most effect control is elimination
what are the effect of thermal stress
too high tempartures can lead to heat stroke, too low can lead to hypothermia . control is to limit the workers exposure to hazardous temperatures
what is the core principle of ergonomics
fit the job to the worker, not the worker to the job.
