Q

What is a level 1 randomized controlled trial?

A

Set of clients are identified and then randomly assigned to 2 or more different intervention groups

There is a control group- usually receives no intervention

Another favor influencing the outcome is reduced

Disadvantage- expense and having a group not receive an intervention

Often used to test effectiveness of an intervention or compare several forms

Q

What is a level 2 nonrandomized controller design (cohort design)?

A

Prospective study- cause time moves forward

Control group of clients that hav not been exposed to the situation of interest

Allocation of clients to the intervention and control group is not under control of the investigator

Investigator works with people who have been exposed and work to find people similar to them

Cannot be certain intervention is responsible for the outcome

Q

What is a level 3 before- after design (pretest and posttest)?

A

Used to evaluate a group of clients involved in an intervention

Evaluator collects info about the initial status of a group of clients in terms of outcomes of interests and collects info about outcomes after intervention is received

Useful if you do not what to withhold intervention from anyone

With no control group it is hard to judge if intervention was responsible for outcome

Changes could be due to disease progression, medication use, lifestyle or environmental
