Final- Evidence-Based Practice In OT Flashcards
What is evidence based practice?
The conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about eh care of individuals
The integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values
What is evidence based practice the integration of?
1) clinical expertise/ expert opinion
2) external scientific evidence
3) Client/ patient/ caregiver perspectives to provide high quality service reflecting the interests, values, needs and choices of individuals we serve
Why is EBP important?
Improve clients outcomes
Improve therapist knowledge
Update therapist knowledge
Stimulates clinical relevant research
Increase accountability of therapists
What are common applications of EBP?
Deciding the best treatment/ intervention
Making choices about assessment tools
Selecting preventive it harm reduction interventions or programs
Determining disorder or illness
Course or progression of disorder or illness
Prevalence of symptoms
Economic decision making
What is a level 1 randomized controlled trial?
Set of clients are identified and then randomly assigned to 2 or more different intervention groups
There is a control group- usually receives no intervention
Another favor influencing the outcome is reduced
Disadvantage- expense and having a group not receive an intervention
Often used to test effectiveness of an intervention or compare several forms
What is a level 2 nonrandomized controller design (cohort design)?
Prospective study- cause time moves forward
Control group of clients that hav not been exposed to the situation of interest
Allocation of clients to the intervention and control group is not under control of the investigator
Investigator works with people who have been exposed and work to find people similar to them
Cannot be certain intervention is responsible for the outcome
What is a cohort group?
Clients who share a common experience within a defined period of time
What is a level 3 before- after design (pretest and posttest)?
Used to evaluate a group of clients involved in an intervention
Evaluator collects info about the initial status of a group of clients in terms of outcomes of interests and collects info about outcomes after intervention is received
Useful if you do not what to withhold intervention from anyone
With no control group it is hard to judge if intervention was responsible for outcome
Changes could be due to disease progression, medication use, lifestyle or environmental
