- p 345. EDITING FIELDS THROUGH A PORTAL. When you look at a field in a portal, you can click into in and:
edit the data therein. When you do, the job record itself is updated.
- When you click into a field in a PORTAL, one of TWO things will happen:
a. If you click into an ENTERABLE FIELD, you’ll go right into that field. You would say you’re in the first PORTAL ROW, and in the JOBS::NAME FIELD
b. If you click in a PORTAL somewhere OTHER THAN IN A FIELD, you SELECT THE PORTAL ROW INSTEAD- THE ENTIRE ROW HIGHLIGHTS. You’re still on THE FIRST PORTAL ROW, but you’re not IN ANY FIELD this time.
- When you’re in a PORTAL ROW, the DELETE RECORD COMMAND takes on a NEW MEANING. If you have an ENTIRE PORTAL ROW SELECTED, FileMaker assumes:
you want to DELETE THE RELATED RECORD- THE ONE IN THE PORTAL- NOT the so called MASTER RECORD (the CUSTOMER RECORD, in this case).
- If you are in a FIELD (and thus don’t have an ENTIRE PORTAL ROW SELECTED), and choose the DELETE RECORD command, FileMaker:
ASKS YOU which RECORD YOU WANT TO DELETE: THE MASTER RECORD OR THE RELATED RECORD.
- If you are in a field with a PORTAL, but you ARE NOT on a PORTAL ROW, then the DELETE RECORD COMMAND will:
work exactly like it does on a layout that has NO PORTALS.
- p 347. How do you see the SETTINGS for your PORTAL?
LAYOUT MODE: FORMAT–>PORTAL
- What are the THREE MAIN characteristics of a PORTAL?
a. PORTALS work with RELATED DATA
b. PORTALS can have a SCROLL BAR
c. Each ROW in a PORTAL can hold MORE THAN ONE FIELD.
- Why are PORTALS limited to showing FIELDS?
NOT SO. A PORTAL CAN SHOW LINES, SHAPES, PICTURES, and even BUTTONS.
