Fighting Disease Flashcards
What does the skin do to act against Pathogens?
The skin acts as a barrier, it also secretes antimicrobial substances
What do the Hair and Mucus do to act against Pathogens?
Hair and Mucus in your nose act as a trap against Pathogens
What do the Trachea and Bronchi do to act against Pathogens?
They secrete mucus to trap pathogens and contain cilia which waft the mucus to the back of the throat
What does the stomach do to act against Pathogens?
Produces Hydrochloric Acid this kills the pathogens
What is the most important part of your immune system?
White Blood Cells
What do the White Blood Cells do?
They patrol in your blood for microbes they then have three layers of invading the microbe
What are the white blood cells three stages of invading a microbe?
- Engulfing
- Producing Antibodies
- Producing Antitoxins
What is the process called when a white blood cell engulfs foreign cells?
phagocytosis
What are the unique molecules on the surface of invading Pathogens?
Antigens
What are the proteins that lock onto invading cell called?
antibodies
What do antibodies do once an invading cell is detected?
lock onto the cell and then searches for other invading cells like it
What happens if the human is infected with the same pathogen again?
The white blood cells will rapidly produce antibodies to kill it. The person becomes naturally immune so they won’t get ill.
What do antitoxins do?
Counteract toxins produced by the invading bacteria
