Evolution Flashcards
What Scientist came up with the theory of evolution?
Charles Darwin
What was Darwins Theory called?
evolution by natural selection
What was Darwin’s early understandings of Species?
Species show wide variation in their characteristics (phenotypic variation). Organisms compete for limited resources
What was Darwin’s conclusion Evolution (competition)?
Organisms with the most suitable characteristics for the environment are more successful competitors. (More likely to survive) ‘Survival of the fittest’
What is Evolution?
All of today’s species have evolved from simple life forms that first started to develop over three billion years ago.
What is the development of new species called?
Speciation
What is Speciation?
The phenotype of organisms change so much over time because of natural selection, a new species is formed
When does Speciation happen?
When populations same species change to become reproductively isolated. This means they can’t interbreed
Species can become extinct for what five reasons?
- Environment changes
- New Predator
- New Disease
- can’t compete for food
- catastrophic event
