Fighting Disease Flashcards
What are physical barriers that protect us?
Skin - barrier, and blood clots quickly seal cuts
Hair - trap particles
Mucus - trap particles
Cells produce mucus
What are some chemical barriers that protect us?
The stomach produce hydrochloric acid , this kills pathogens eaten.
Eyes make lysozyme that kills most bacteria on surface of eyes.
What do white blood cells do?
Travel around the blood and patrolling for pathogens.
What are B-Lymphocytes?
White blood cells that are involved in specific parts of the immune response. It is for a specific pathogen.
What are antigens?
Unique molecules on its surface of pathogens.
What do B-lymphocytes produce when they find a pathogen?
Produce proteins called antibodies, they bind to pathogens so the white blood cells can kill them. The antibodies are specific to the pathogen so it will find that pathogen only.
If the antibodies find 1 pathogen then they will reproduce rapidly to find all similar pathogens.
