fighting disease Flashcards
antibiotics
kill only bacterial disease’s. they must contain anti toxins which neutralize toxins used by bacteria.
what is a pathogen
a pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease
how can pathogens enter the body
nose mouth ears eyes open wounds reproductive system
what are the defense mechanisms to prevent pathogens entering body
cilia in nose saliva skin blood clot and forms scab stomach acid
antivirals
kill only viral disease
why are virus harder to kill than bacteria
viruses are in our cells and use it as barrier to protect itself
what do painkillers do
relieve symptoms not cure or kill disease
how do viruses make us ill
they inject there DNA in our cells than rapidly reproduce until the cell burst then they will do this to other cells.
how does bacteria make us ill
they release toxins and poisons which makes us ill
what is a vaccination
A vaccination is a dead, weak or inactive form of the pathogen
what is the MMR vaccination
it is a vaccination against measles mumps and rubella
how are pathogens spread
poor hygeine sneezing/coughing water direct contact with people bodily fluids
what is the purpose of a vaccine
by injecting a weak form of a pathogen white blood cells produce antibodies to attack pathogen also producing memory cells. the memory cells remember the pathogen and produce correct antibodies quicker. killing pathogen before it takes affect
how do white blood cells fight against pathogens
phagocytes engulf the pathogen by using antibodies to group pathogen and lymphocytes produce antitoxins to neutralize the toxins produced by pathogen.
what are MRSA
they are resistant to antibiotics and are like super-bugs. they are caused by the overuse of antibiotics and people not completing the course of the antibiotics.
