enzymes Flashcards
what are enzymes
a substance produced by a living organism which acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
what are enzymes made of
Enzymes are large molecules that speed up the chemical reactions inside cells. They are made from long chains of different amino acids and folded to make 3D shape
what is the active site
A region on an enzyme that binds to a protein or other substance to break it down into smaller particles
what does denatured mean
It is when a enzyme is subjected to extreme PH or temperatures and the active site changes shape and doesn’t fit with the particle making it none effective
where is bile made and stored
bile is made in liver and stored in gall bladder
what does lipase do and where is it made
it converts fat into glycerol and fatty acids and is made in pancreas and small intestine.
what does amylase do and where is it made
converts starch into simple sugars and is made in salivary gland, pancreas and small intestine.
what does protease do and where is it made
converts proteins into amino acids and it is made in stomach pancreas and small intestine.
what does optimum mean
The best conditions for the enzymes to there job
