diseases and risk factors Flashcards
what are statins
Statins are a class of prescription drugs that help to lower cholesterol. Statins block the enzyme that the body uses to make cholesterol in the liver. The liver, along with other cells in the body, makes about 75 percent of the body’s cholesterol. By blocking this enzyme, the amount of cholesterol your liver makes is significantly reduced.
Give 2 advantages of statins
Most statins successfully help lower low-density lipoproteins, also known as LDL or “bad” cholesterol. Lowering your cholesterol levels with statins helps decrease your risk of stroke, heart attack, and other vessel-related diseases. For example, they help stabilize the blood vessel lining, which benefits the whole body. This also makes plaque less likely to rupture in the heart, lowering the risk of a heart attack. Statins also help to relax the blood vessels, which leads to a decrease in blood pressure.
what is the difference between biological and mechanical replacement hearts valves
Biological valves are made with the valves and tissues derived from animals or human donors. an artificial tool with a valve mechanism
what is meant by non communicable disease
A noncommunicable disease (NCD) is a medical condition or disease that is by definition non-infectious and non-transmissible among people.
give an example of where different types of disease might interact with body
some types of cancer can be triggered by infection and by certain viruses.
hepatitis virus can cause long time infections in liver leading to increased chance of liver cancer
what is meant by a risk factor of a disease
Something that increases a person’s chances of developing a disease. For example, cigarette smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, and obesity is a risk factor for heart disease.
which type of tumour is cancerous
Tumours are groups of abnormal cells that form lumps or growths. Different types of tumours grow and behave differently, depending on whether they are non-cancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant).
