Fieldwork Flashcards
What is our human enquiry?
To investigate the pattern of housing and environmental quality in Reigate.
What is our physical geography enquiry?
To investigate the effect of trampling on the abundance and diversity of vegetation at Reigate Heath
how many stages are there in a geographical enquiry?
5
What are the stages?
Planning, data collection, data presentation, data analysis, conclusion
What should you do in the planning stage?
Identify a question, hypothesis and location
What should you do in the data collection stage?
Choose data to collect, figure out HOW to collect it, ensure it is collected safely
What should you do in the data presentation stage?
Figure out how to display the data and why you choose what you do
What should you do in the data analysis stage?
Work out what the data shows (patterns, trends). Identify any anomalies, explain what the data shows
What should you do in the conclusion/ evaluation stage?
Figure out the answer to the question and how successful the study was
What 3 primary data did we use for PHYSICAL geography?
Quadrat of % cover, species count, height of tallest plant
What secondary data did we use for PHYSICAL geography?
visitor numbers, OS map, a management plan for Reigate Heath, weather
What data collection method did we use for Physical geography?
Systematic sampling, every 2 metres place a quadrat
What does quadrat sampling allow?
Study of vegetation over a large space
What is a cost benefit of quadrats?
They are inexpensive
What is a problem of quadrats?
Only an estimate of vegetation cover as human error has to be taken into account
Why did multiple people count vegetation?
It is subjective so we gather a rounded opinion
How can you present this Physical geography?
A Kite diagram or proportional circles
What are 3 advantages of a kite diagram for physical geography?
-displays change over distance
-easy to interpret
-easy to make comparisons
What are 3 DISadvantages of a kite diagram for physical geography?
They are visually subjective –>scale influences effect
Only works with a specific range of data
Time consuming to construct by hand
What can you use to plot proportional circles?
arcGIS
what is an advantage of using arcGIS for proportional circles?
The data is plotted onto a map to display vegetation coverage
What is a disadvantage of proportional circles?
they can blend together and be difficult to read
How can we make our enquiry more reliable (time of year)- physical?
Record at different times of the year —> summer will have less vegetation
what is a benefit of systematic sampling?
it avoids bias and gives a rounded representation of the area
