Fibrous Support System & Passive Stay Apparatus in Horses Flashcards
Suspensory Apparatus of the Equine Forelimb
- Fibrous support of the fetlock and pastern joints
Suspensory Apparatus of the Equine Forelimb
Composed of: Interosseus (suspensory ligament) Distal Sesamoidean ligaments
Interosseous m.: Horses
Tendinous Interosseous = suspensory ligament In young foals muscle fiber may be present
Branches of the interosseous m. in horses
Medial and lateral branches of the interosseus Attach to the proximal sesamoids
Extensor branches of the interosseus m. in horses
Medial and lateral extensor branches of the interosseus Extend from sesamoids to common digital extensor tendon
Proximal sesamoids
Branches of the interosseous Collateral sesamoidean ligament Intersesamoidean ligament Distal ligaments of the proximal sesamoids
Distal ligaments of the proximal sesamoids
Straight sesamoidean ligament Oblique sesamoidean ligament Cruciate sesamoidean ligament
Distal sesamoid
Collateral sesamoidean (or navicular) ligaments Distal sesamoidean (or navicular) ligament Also referred to as Impar ligament
Check apparatus of the forelimb
In conjunction with the suspensory apparatus, prevent extension or passive collapse of the limb while resting Superficial digital flexor tendon - Proximal check ligament Deep digital flexor - Distal check ligament
Purpose of the Stay Apparatus
The fibrous support of the thoracic limb of mechanically fix respective joints to support the horses weight with minimal muscle involvement Allow the horse to sleep while standing
Components of the Stay Apparatus
Suspensory apparatus Check apparatus Extensor carpi radialis tendon Lacertus fibrosus Serratus ventralis m.
