Blood Vessels of the Thoracic Limb Flashcards
Arteries Supplying the Thoracic Limb
(4)
Subclavian a.
Axillary a.
- External continuation of subclavian a.
Brachial a.
- Name changes from axillary a. at proximal humerus
Median a.
Axillary a.
- Main artery to the thoracic limb
- Name of the axillary a. changes to “brachial a.” at the proximal humerus (end of teres major)
Branches:
- External thoracic a.
- Lateral thoracic a.
- Suprascapular a.
- Subscapular a. (2 branches off this)
- Thoracodorsal a. (Latissimus dorsi m.)
- Caudal circumflex humeral a. (deltoideus m.)

Branches of the Subscapular a. (2)

- Thoracodorsal a. & v.
- Supplies Latissimus dorsi m.
- Caudal circumflex humeral a. & v.
- Supplies Deltoideus m.

Cardiovascular System
- Heart (center)
- Blood Vessels
- Lymphatic Vessels
Arteries
- Carry O2 rich blood from the heart to organs/tissues
- Rounder
- More muscular, hold their shape
Veins
- Drain tissues
- Take blood from tissues back to the heart
- appear collapsed
Collateral Circulation
- Blood vessels w/in organ or tissue communicate with eachother
- Blood supply received from neighboring minor vessels
- Basically- supply is lessened but not completely lost when collateral circulation is present
- Prevents ischemia
Anastamoses
Connection made between adjacent blood vessels (collateral circulation)
Cranial circumflex humeral a. &
Caudal circumflex humeral a.
Cranial interosseous a. & c
ollateral ulnar a. & caudal interosseous a.
Transverse cubital a. & Caudal interosseous a.
The “parent vessel” of the caudal circumflexhumeral a. is ______
Subscapular a.
Main blood supply to the pectoral m.
External thoracic a.
Lateral thoracic a.
- Supplies pectoral b/c of of vicinity
- Supplies cutaneous trunchi m.
What is the main blood supply to the digits in all the species?
- Median a. & v.
Brachial a.
(Parent vessel: Axillary a. )
Branches:
- Cranial circumflex humeral a.
- supplies proximal biceps brachii m.
- Deep brachial a.
- Bicipital a.
- Transverse cubital a.
- Collateral ulnar a.
- Superficial brachial a.
- Common interosseus a.
- Ulnar a.
- Caudal interosseus a.
- Cranial interosseus a.
NAME CHANGE –> median a. @ proximal antebrachium
Cranial circumflex humeral a.

- Branch off of brachial a.
- Extends cranially and dives between biceps brachii m. and the humerus
- circumflex b/c it goes in the cranial direction around the humerus
SPECIES DIFFERENCE = not in cows!
Deep brachial a.
- Extends caudally
- Dives between the long head of triceps brachii m. & medial head of triceps brachii m.

Bicipital a.

- Extends cranially
- Supplies biceps brachii m.
Transverse cubital a.
- Dives deep into biceps brachii m. to supply the elbow joint
*
Caudal circumflex humeral a.

- Supplies deltoideus m.
- Caudal edge of humerus dives caudally then circles around humerus
External thoracic a.
- Branch off axillary a.
- Supplies pectoral mm.
- Parent vessel = Axillary a.

Collateral ulnar a. & v.
- Distal part of triceps brachii m. & caudal aspect of the elbow
- Tensor fasciae antebrachii m.
- Parent vessel = Brachial a.

Thoracodorsal a., v. and n.

Latissimus dorsi m.
