fever, pain, inflammation Flashcards
NSAIDs
inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis
block of the enzymes COX 1 and 2
rapidly absorbed from the GI tratc
the peak is 1-3 hours
metabolized by the liver
excretion in the urine
cross placenta
found in breast milk
1st generation
block both COX 1 many cells GI
COX 2 - inflammation
2nd generation
NSAIDS block only COX 2
acetaminophen
acts directly on the thermoregulatory cells of the hypothalamus to produce antipyresis - may work peripherally to block pain impulse generation, may also inhibit prostaglandin synthesis in the CNS
used to treat pain and fever
headache, rash, hives, angioedema, hepatoxicity, liver failure
morphine
narcotic agonists
binds to the MU receptors in brain
analgesia used off label for dyspnea in left vent failure
CNS depression, resp depression, GI slowed motility, and constipation
assess pain, vital signs resp rate and constipation
