Feline infectious disease Flashcards
1
Q
Feline Panleukaemia Virus (FPV)
- CS (4)
- FIE CS (6)
- DDX (4)
- Dx (5)
- Tx (5)
A
- parvovirus
- CS : foetus 21 days: cerebellar hypoplasia, young kittens: sudden death, older kittens/cats: intestinal disease (FIE) & sever panleukopenia
- FIE CS : fever, inappetence, anorexia, vomiting, severe watery diarrhoea, secondary bacterial infections (determines severity of disease)
- DDx: intussuception, FB, acute bacterial peritonitis, poisoning
- Dx: CS, history, haematology, virus isolation (faeces/oropharyngeal swab–>PCR), serology
- Tx: nursing, IVFT, antiemetics, IV ABs, isolation
2
Q
cat flu
- viruses
- CS (7)
- Dx
- Tx (4)
A
feline calicivius feline herpesvirus - CS: pyrexia, depression, sneezing, conjuntivitis, severe occular and nasal discharge, dyspnoea, inappetence -Dx: oropharyngeal swabs -Tx: isolate, nursing, fluids, ABs
3
Q
herpes virus
- CS (2)
- persistence
A
- URT and occular signs (conjunctivits and ulcerative keratitis)
- latent in trigerminal ganglium
4
Q
Calicivirus
- virus property
- CS (4)
A
- less labile the HV
- URT, oral ulceration, viral arthritis, gingivitis/stomatitis
5
Q
chlamydophila felis
- viral property
- CS (2)
- Dx (2)
- Tx (2)
A
- unable to replicate independantly
- conjunctivitis ± mild rhinitis
- Dx: isolation, serology
- Tx: tetracyclines
6
Q
FIP
-viral properties (5)
A
- protein spikes in nucleus
- difficult to grow in lab
- mild diarrhoea 2-3 days
- virus excreted weeks before development of CS
- kittens infected by non-maternal mothers/other kittens
7
Q
Diseases of FIP (2 + 1/4)
A
- Enteric disease (FCoV): mild enteritis
- Systemic diseases (FIP): immune mediated vasculitits, complement fixation, pyogranuloma formation, vascular damage –> protein leakage
8
Q
FIP
- pathogenesis (4)
- Dx (6)
- CS of each type of FIP (3/4)
A
- ingestion –> replication in tonsils/intestinal epithelium –> replication in lymphoid tissues –> replication in other tissues
- DX: immunohistopathology of biopsy specimen, CS, history, fluid analysis, systemic inflammation, presence of virus
- Wet: effusive lesion (modified transudates): peritoneal (ascites)/ pleural (dyspnoea)
- Dry: granulomatous lesions, neurological signs (ataxia/paresis/nystagmus), liver and kidney dysfunction, occular disease (iritis/retinitis)
9
Q
FIP
-clinical pathology (4)
-serology
Tx
A
- hyperglobinaemia, lymphopenia, neutrophilia, anaemia
- FCoV serology: negative = probs not, mild - quantitative analysis, high = probs is if it also has CS
- Tx: euthanise
10
Q
Feline cowpox
A
- skin lesions on head and neck
- usually self-limiting (unless steroids/FIV +ve)
- rodent resevoir
- zoonotic
