Explain the spark event of the February 1917 Revolution:
Rationing of bread leads to international women’s day march which later becomes political
What were the long terms causes of the February 1917 Revolution: (4)
- Little reforms since 1905
- Poor living conditions/unemployment
- Mistreatment of soldiers
- Neglect of government
What were the short terms causes of the February 1917 Revolution: (4)
- Mutiny of the soldiers
- Tsar’s orders to shoot crowds
- Failure in WW1
- Tsarina and Rasputin
What happened in Early February? (2)
- Bread was rationed angering women
- Shortages meant that women had to wait 24 hours for their rations (only part of a loaf)
What happens on the 23rd of February? (2)
- International women’s day - a peaceful, good-humoured march by female workers.
- March grew in size and became more political
What happens on the 23rd - 26th February? (3)
- Demonstrations grew in size.
- Second day, men joined the strike, then so did soldiers due to the fear of being sent to the front line.
- Sailors at Kronstadt hear of the strike
What happens on the 26th - 27th February? (3)
- Tsar hears of protests ordering his troops to fire at the crowds casuing more hostility towards the Tsar
- More of his army mutinies against him
- The police stay loyal until the anger turns to them
What happens on the 27th of February? (3)
- Duma forms a special committee which the Tsar has no involvement in
- Tsar realises he has lost control making one last attempt to return to Petrograd
- Generals would no longer support him if he chooses to retain power
What happens on the 2nd of March? (2)
- Tsar’s train is stopped on it’s way back to Petrograd by revolutionaries.
- Tsar announces his abdication on the same day
What was the outcome of the February 1917 Revolution for the Tsar?
Tsar has no other choice but to abdicate
