Q

Why would an individual with acromegaly fail a glucose tolerance test?

A

Acromegaly is caused by a pituitary tumor that releases GH unregulated. The effects of GH are largely mediated by IGF-1. In normal individuals, a glucose load will decrease the production of GH, but in acromegaly it will not. They also are insulin resistant and usually will have hyperglycemia no matter when tested.
