How to diagnose chromic fatigu symdrome
A. Classify as chronic fatigue syndrome if both of the following criteria are met
1. Unexplained persistent or relapsing fatigue of new or definite onset that is not due to ongoing exertion, is not relieved by rest, and results in a substantial reduction in previous levels of activity
2. Four or more of the following symptoms are concurrently present for 6 months or longer
a. impaired memory or concentration (severe enough to reduce levels of occupational, social, or personal activites)
b. sore throat
c. tender cervical or axillary lymph nodes
d. muscle pain
e. multijoint pain (without joint swelling or redness)
f. new headaches
g. unrefreshing sleep
h. postexertion malaise (lasting more than 24 hr)
Red flag pointers for Fatigue
Unexplained weight loss
• Sleep disturbance
• Symptoms of depression
• Drug and alcohol abuse
• Persistent fever
Screen anxiety by
GAD 7
Acute fatigue
Within 1 month
Prolonged fatigue within
1-6 months
Chronic fatigue within
6 months more
Classify as idiopathic chronic fatigue if
fatigue severity or symptom criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome are not met
Medications associated with fatigue
Antihistamines
• Corticosteroids
• Antidepressants
• Antihypertensives (beta-blockers)
• Muscle relaxants
