Farriery management of the laminitic Flashcards
1
Q
What is laminitis?
A
- Failure of attachment apparatus between the hoof and distal phalanx
2
Q
What should be done with acute laminitis?
A
- Remove cause
- Box rest
- FEED
- Pain relief
- Frog pressure
3
Q
What should be done if rotation of P3?
A
- Trim hoof carefully
- Remove heel
- Fit heart bar shoe
- Check regularly
4
Q
What is founder / sinker?
A
- Rotation of P3
- Lost all laminar bond
- Coronary band depression
- Possible separation
- Serum exudate
5
Q
Why would you perform dorsal wall resection?
A
- To relief pressure on the hoof from the dorsal aspect due to fluid in the under the hoof capsule
- If not relieved - pressure from fluid pushes P3 down towards the sole
6
Q
What should be done with chronic laminitis?
A
- Regular farriery = improve foot balance
