Family Intervention Training Flashcards
Evaluation
Lot of studies have found uniformly positive results.
Most studies focus on families high in EE.
Reduction in the rate of relapse over 12 months from 69% to 25-33%.
Results are consistent and show highly significant improvements.
Participants in FIT often show more compliance in medication regimes.
Partly responsible for improved rates if relapse.
Drugs alone do not adequately prevent the deterioration, the therapy itself is also important.
Concept
Certain aspects of family life affect the course of schizo which has led to the development of many family intervention programmes.
All family members must be present.
They along with a therapist look for ways of dealing with new ways of coping with day to day problems.
Therapy aims to give family skills in coping with schizo.
Schizo is treated as an expert.
Therapy starts off with day to day difficulties.
Moves on to management of distressing behaviours and relatives own needs.
Family learns to communicate more clearly and constructively.
Acknowledges that there are feelings of anger and disappointment and learns to deal with these in way to avoid excessive use of them.
Practice in sessions and set as homework.
Pfammater et al 2006
Meta analysis shows that dying the last three decades, FIT has been the most studied therapy and results consistently show that schizos become better socially adjusted with fewer symptoms.
