Q
Typicals v Atypicals
A
Typicals block D2 receptors.
Atypicals block D1, D2, D3 and D4, but fewer receptors overall.
Atypicals also act on other NTs.
Neuroleptic a inhibit activity in the basal ganglia region of the brain an this inhibits activity in the cortex.
Atypicals replaced typicals but both have serious side effects.

Effects on dopamine
A
Drugs bind to dopamine receptors and there are 5 kinds.
Drug binds to dopamine receptor so dopamine cannot.
Too much dopamine has been shown to produce psychosis.
Positive symptoms seem to be contained and there may be marked cognitive and behavioural improvements.
