Pinna

A

17
Q

Define

Sclera

A

The tough, fibrous, white portion of the eye that protects the more delicate inner structures.

18
Q

Define

Subcutaneous emphysema

A

A characteristic crackling sensation felt on palpation of the skin, caused by the presence of air in soft tissues.

19
Q

Define

Turbinates

A

Layers of bone within the nasal cavity.

20
Q

Define

Tympanic membrane

A

The eardrum

a thin, semitransparent membrane in the middle ear that transmits sound vibrations to the internal ear by means of auditory ossicles.

21
Q

What are common types of injuries to the face and neck?

A

Soft-tissue injuries and fractures of the bones.

22
Q

What are the priorities when treating face and neck injuries?

A

Prevent further injury, manage the airway and ventilation, control bleeding, and manage potential cervical spine injury

23
Q

How can airway compromise be caused by heavy bleeding into the airway, swelling, or injuries to the structures of the airway, face, neck, or central nervous system?

A

It interferes with normal respiration.

24
Q

How should heavy bleeding from soft-tissue injuries to the face be controlled?

A

Use direct pressure with a dry, sterile dressing

25
If brain tissue is exposed during a facial injury, what type of dressing should be used?
A moist, sterile dressing.
26
Why is checking for bleeding inside the mouth important with face/neck injuries?
Because this may produce airway obstruction.
27
What maneuver can help open the airway and clear secretions in a patient with facial injuries?
The jaw-thrust maneuver.
28
If a patient has avulsed (torn away) pieces of skin and tissue, what should you do?
Save the pieces, keep them moist and cool, and transport them with the patient for possible reattachment at the hospital.
29
What might unequal pupils in an unconscious patient with head/face trauma indicate?
An illness or an injury to the brain. (Note: Some people are born with unequal pupils)
30
How should foreign bodies on the surface of the eye be irrigated?
Gently with normal saline solution, flushing from the region of the eye closest to the nose toward the outside, away from the other eye.
31
If a foreign body is embedded in the eyeball, how should it be removed?
Do not attempt to remove it. It should only be removed by a cotton-tipped applicator if on the eyelid itself. Always irrigate surface foreign bodies.
32
What can cause burn injury to the eye?
Chemicals, heat, and light rays.
33
Clear fluid draining from the ears or nose after a head injury may indicate what?
A possible skull fracture.
34
What should you suspect if you observe blunt and penetrating trauma to the neck?
Life-threatening injuries. Palpate the neck for signs of swelling or deformity.
