stye/ hordeolum
actue staphylococcal infection of hair follice/ sebaceous gland
- occurs @ eyelid margin
- pain, redness, swelling , irritation
- either resolve of swell, pus, burst
- recurrence & spread is common
no antibiotics
warm compress 10-20min 3/4 times day
chalazion
blockage of meibomian gland (stop eyelash stick together)
- adults>children
- firm painless lump (no inflame) gradually enlarge
non infectious but secondary infection
chalazion treatment
self limiting
few weeks
no specific treatment- eye lube & warm compress
surgical remove if affect vision
blepharitis
chronic eyelid margin inflame both eyes
3 types
seborrheic (greasy, scales)
staphylococcal (dry crusty)
meibomian gland dysfunction red swollen itchy, excessive tearing, grittiness, worse in morning generally
blepharitis
improve eye hygiene
warm compress (eye closed 2-5min)
gentle scrub NaHCO3 , eye wipe- new pad each eye, in to out
if not improve - refer
treat other seborrheic dermatitis & dry eye
if infection (staph) use antibiotics
reason refer
orbital cellulitis - inflammation skin surround orbit the eye (fever, swollen eye)
entropion - inversion eyelid margin (eye irritation, conjunctival redness)
ectropion - eversion eyelid margin (watery eyes, inadequate lube)
basal cell carcinoma (nodular lesion reddish)
dry eye
persistent bilateral dryness of cornea & conjunctiva
simp - dry burning irritated tired excess tearing
cause - age/menopause, environment, medication, medical conditions, others
dry eye management
avoid dry environment & triggers
use humidifier, wrap around glasses, less screen time
artificial tears
- all same/ patient preference
- avoid preservatives frequent lube
- caution preservatives & contact lenses - no interaction w other meds
refer 2-4 week treatment no work
ocular lubricants
drops - may frequent admin
gels - longer relief & blurred vision
ointment - overnight coz blur vision
eye spray - on eye lid
